A Short Review: Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching

I finished reading Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man's Education, by Mychal Denzel Smith today, and it is an engaging, inspiring, and brilliant book about his growth and transformation as a Black man in America. I was on the verge of tears when he talked about the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and too many others & the ways in which they did not get to continue to grow, make mistakes, and just experience life. Chapter 6's revelations of him living with depression and anxiety hit so close to home for me; I needed to take slow deep breaths after reading it. Mychal's analysis and critique of Barack Obama's presidency is spot on. Everyone should read Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man's Education, but I especially recommend it for black boys and men, because I think it's important that they see a Black man engage with questions and evolve his thinking about Black masculinity, homophobia, sexism and patriarchy, and mental health.
